Hefei was founded in the 8th century BCE though the name Hefei was not used until the 2nd century BCE, at a location farther north of where it is now. The current location of the city was established in 926, becoming an important center of defense against invaders. Though it has always been a prosperous town, Hefei began to flourish in the late 1930s with its growth in industry and consequently population. Today it is the capital of the Anhui province near China’s eastern coast to the west and slightly north of Shanghai.
Sister City History
Hefei and Columbus have been sister cities since 1988 after a delegation from Columbus went to China to negotiate obtaining a panda bear for the Columbus Zoo. A delegation from Hefei then came to Columbus to formalize the agreement. The sister city relationship with Hefei is one of Columbus’s strongest sister city pairings, with frequent people-to-people exchanges and visits.
Economy
The area is one of the fastest growing economic bases in China since it was designated as one of 10 cities by the Chinese national government to receive priority funding for expansion and growth. Though it originated as an agricultural town, Hefei has grown to encompass all types of industry, including agriculture, administrative services, manufacturing, steel, chemical technologies, textiles, and research and development through the universities.
Education
Like Columbus, Hefei is a major center of learning and higher education in China, as it is home to numerous universities. Such universities include the University of Science and Technology of China; Hefei University of Technology; Anhui University; Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Anhui Medical University; Anhui Agricultural University; Anhui Institute of Architecture and Industry; and Hefei College.
Culture
Hefei’s culture is an interesting blend of people and history. It has long-standing historical traditions, but it is also heavily influenced by its immigrant population from other parts of the country. The city is known for its waterways, including the Fei River and Chaohu Lake. Hefei is also home to the soccer team Anhui Jiufang, which plays in the Chinese Football Association Jia League.
